Mój mąż spóźnił się na nasze pierwsze USG – ale kiedy wszedł, lekarz zapytał: „Czekaj… Czy nie byłaś tu dwa dni temu?”

I watched Dr. Howard’s face instead of the monitor.

Then a fast, steady heartbeat filled the room.

“There,” she said. “That’s your baby.”

My eyes burned.

Nolan reached for my hand.

I let him hold two fingers.

“That’s your baby.”

“We’re really doing this,” he whispered.

I kept looking at the screen.

And then the question came.

Had he heard this before? And if so, with whom?

I waited until we reached the parking lot.

“Who were you here with?”

“We’re really doing this.”

Nolan unlocked the car.

“Can we talk at home?”

“No.”

“Ayla.”

“Who?”

He rubbed the back of his neck.

“Can we talk at home?”

That told me there was an answer.

“Madison.”

I stared at him.

Madison had been Nolan’s best friend since before he met me. She was pregnant too, and her husband had recently left.

I hadn’t known my husband had become part of her pregnancy.

“You came here with Madison?”

That told me there was an answer.
